Zigbee Smart Soil Moisture Sensor Review

Hello everyone, welcome back to SmartTube! 📺 Today, I’ll show you how I’ve automated my garden 🏡 using this Zigbee smart soil moisture sensor 🌱. If you’re into gardening and want to save water by only watering when needed 💦, this sensor might be just what you need! Let’s dive in! 🚀

📦 Unboxing & First Impressions

I got this sensor from AliExpress for about $17 💰. It arrived well-packaged, and the first thing I noticed was its build quality.
The sensor has two stainless steel probes 🛠️ and a small Zigbee module in a weather-resistant case 🌧️. It feels quite solid, and the stainless steel probes are perfect for outdoor use.

🔋 Powering Up

To power the sensor, you’ll need two AA alkaline batteries 🔋🔋. Remember, alkaline batteries are recommended over rechargeable ones due to voltage differences ⚡. Installing the batteries is simple—just unscrew the four screws 🔩 on the back, insert the batteries, and screw it back in place.
Once powered, press the button to put it into pairing mode 🔄, and you’re ready to connect!

🏡 Connecting to Home Assistant

Since I’m using Home Assistant with a Zigbee dongle, I added the sensor through Zigbee2MQTT. The pairing process was super fast ⚡—the sensor was detected in no time!
After pairing, it immediately started reporting temperature 🌡️ and soil moisture 💧, along with battery status 🔋.

🌧️ Outdoor Use

I placed the sensor in my garden to monitor my lawn’s moisture. Since I have a robot mower 🤖, I had to position it carefully to avoid any collisions.
Here’s a tip: If you’re using it on a lawn, place it near the edge or somewhere out of the mower’s way. The stainless steel probes are quite durable, but it’s better to be safe than sorry! 😉

🌱 Using the Sensor

With the sensor in place, I can now monitor the moisture levels before and after watering. This helps me know exactly when my lawn needs water 💦.
For example, after a heavy rain, the moisture reading spikes 📈, but after regular watering, the increase is more gradual.

🛠️ Comparing with Other Sensors

I’ve used Bluetooth soil sensors before, but they weren’t as reliable. They often had poor range 📡 and drained their button batteries 🔋 quickly.
This Zigbee sensor is a huge improvement—it has better range, longer battery life, and provides more accurate data ✅.

💰 Price & Final Thoughts

I bought this sensor for around $17 💵, and after a few months of use, it’s still working perfectly 👍. There are newer models available, but they’re mostly similar in features.
If you’re serious about gardening and want an affordable, reliable way to monitor your soil, this sensor is definitely worth it! 🌼🌿
