Today, I’m excited to introduce something truly remarkable—the Linptech Flood Sensor and Rain Detector. This small, triangular gadget is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. With its easy setup and clever design, it can prevent costly water damage and make your smart home even smarter. Let’s dive into why this device deserves a spot in your home.
What Makes It Unique?
At first glance, you might think this is just another water leak or rain sensor. However, unlike typical devices, this one combines both functionalities into a single unit. It can detect both standing water and rain, offering versatility for various use cases.
The triangular design sets it apart from other sensors. Manufactured by Linptech—a brand I hadn’t encountered before—this device caught my attention while browsing for smart home gadgets on AliExpress. Priced at around $10, it seemed like a great deal, and after testing it, I can confidently say it’s worth the price.
Key Features
- Battery Powered: The sensor uses a CR1632 battery, with a claimed lifespan of up to three years. Its Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity ensures efficient power usage.
- Dual Functionality: It can function as a flood sensor when placed on the floor or as a rain detector when mounted vertically.
- Durability: The sensor is designed without sharp edges, allowing water to drain off easily and preventing false alarms due to water retention.
What’s in the Box?
The package includes:
- The Linptech sensor
- A CR1632 battery pre-installed
- Double-sided tape for easy mounting
- A QR code for accessing the user manual online
The device itself has 37 electrodes that act as probes to detect water. Unlike standard water sensors that typically have just two electrodes, this design improves accuracy and responsiveness.
Setup Process
Adding the sensor to your smart home setup is straightforward. It works with the Xiaomi Mi Home app and requires a BLE-compatible gateway. Here’s how to get started:
- Power On: Press the button on the top of the sensor. A blue light will blink, indicating it’s ready for pairing.
- Add to Mi Home: Open the Mi Home app, ensure your gateway is set to the Chinese server (if necessary), and follow the prompts to add the device.
- Placement Options:
- Flood Sensor Mode: Place it flat on the floor. It detects water when the level reaches about 1.2 mm.
- Rain Sensor Mode: Mount it vertically using the included tape. It detects rain with as little as 0.5 mm of water.
Testing the Sensor
I conducted several tests to evaluate the sensor’s performance:
- Flood Detection: I placed the sensor in a shallow dish with water. Once the water level reached the electrodes, the sensor triggered an alert. Drying the sensor with a tissue quickly reset it to its no-water state.
- Rain Simulation: Using a spoon, I dripped water onto the vertically mounted sensor. Initially, it didn’t react, so I adjusted the sensitivity to high. This improved its responsiveness, and it correctly detected the simulated rain.
- False Alarm Handling: The design helps water drain off, but in some cases, small droplets remained on the electrodes, potentially causing false alarms. This might be an area for improvement.
Integration with Home Assistant
While the Mi Home app provides basic functionality, I plan to integrate the sensor with my Home Assistant setup. This will enable more advanced automations, such as:
- Closing windows when it starts raining
- Sending notifications to remind you to take an umbrella
- Disabling irrigation systems during rainfall
Final Thoughts
The Linptech Flood Sensor and Rain Detector is a budget-friendly, innovative solution for smart home enthusiasts. Despite a few minor quirks, it performs well and offers excellent value for its price. Whether you want to prevent indoor flooding or automate outdoor tasks based on weather conditions, this gadget is worth considering.
